Holy Cross CSS and RND achieve Gold standing at NYC Music Festival

April 28, 2016

The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board is extremely proud of both the Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School and Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic High School music departments for their recent achievements at the Heritage Music Festival at the Riverside Cathedral in New York City.

The Regiopolis-Notre Dame band received a Gold standing for their performance and were praised for their technique and musicality from the adjudicators. They were awarded for the Spirit of New York Award which reflects their department, conduct and spirited performance.

The Gold standing allows them to continue performing in the Heritage Festival of Gold Series, which in the past has given them the opportunity to perform in places such as the Orchestra Hall Chicago, Cadogan Hall in London and Carnegie Hall in new York City.

Top Combined Instrumental Score:   HC Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble, Overall Top Scoring Instrumental Ensemble: HC Jazz Ensemble, Adjudicator Award for Best Ensemble: HC Jazz Ensemble, Festival Sweepstakes Winner for Music Program with Highest Overall Score: Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School.

In addition to these prestigious ensemble achievements the following student musicians were given Maestro Awards for their solo performances: Colin Watts (Jazz trumpet solo), Sara Doyle (jazz vocal solo) and Olivia Greenwood-Vidal (vocal solo).

While in New York the Holy Cross student musicians and faculty also saw phenomenal performances of Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art, completed a whirlwind city tour which included visits to Harlem, Central Park, and the World Trade Center Site, and saw a New York Yankees Game in the Bronx. The trip concluded with a visit to St. Patrick's Cathedral where our students celebrated Mass with the Fire Department of New York.

The music programs at Regi and Holy Cross are two of the finest in Eastern Ontario and we are very fortunate to have two school bands that compete at a Gold level, both nationally and internationally. They represent Kingston and the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board very well. Congratulations.
