Sacred Heart students focus on Remembrance

Student placing poppy on grave site.Grade 6 students from Sacred Heart Catholic School, Marmora have been focusing on Collage of photos of students looking at artifacts.Remembrance for the last month, beginning with a Discovery Box of WWI artifacts and replicas from the Canadian War Museum. The students were fascinated by the artifacts which included such items as trench maps, a trench gas rattle, nurse's uniform, officer's wool dress jacket and cap, infantry helmet, barbed wire from Belgium, trench art from an artillery casing, shrapnel fragments, a silk aviator scarf, recruitment posters, a selection of war art and a variety of archival photographs. The week before Remembrance Day the students went to Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery to rake leaves and place a poppy on veterans’ grave sites. Students are learning and researching veterans in partnership with Sacred Heart Church. They also wrote postcards to veterans who reside in a seniors/veterans facility in Temiskaming, thanking them for their sacrifice and service to our country.
