Direct Your Tax Support
As a Catholic, you have the unique opportunity to declare your support for Catholic education through your property taxes.
In Ontario, when you choose to direct your tax support to the Catholic school system, a portion of your provincial education taxes goes to Catholic schools instead of public schools. This doesn’t change the total amount you pay in taxes, but it helps determine how your education tax dollars are allocated. You do not need to have children in Catholic schools to show your support.
Ontario’s Catholic schools are publicly funded, just like public schools. The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB) welcomes all students, regardless of their religious affiliation.
Why support Catholic schools?
Whether you own or rent a home, have children or not, as a Catholic, you have the right to direct your tax support to the Catholic school system. Your decision is important because:
- The funding will be directed to Catholic schools.
- Only registered Catholic school supporters can vote for Catholic school board trustees in municipal elections.
- It shows the strength of support for Catholic schools in Ontario, which can influence government decisions.
- It helps the Board with planning and funding for new spaces and special programs.
This process is a way of supporting the continued funding of Catholic schools alongside the public school system, even though both are publicly funded through taxes. If you do not make a selection, your support goes to the public school system by default.
How to verify your Catholic school support status
You can check your status by:
- Check the assessment section of your Property Assessment Notice
- Check your last Voter Information Card received during a municipal election year.
What to do if you are not registered as a Catholic school supporter
If you are not currently registered as a Catholic school supporter and would like to direct your support to Catholic education, you can either:
- Change your school support through the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) Online School Support Designation Portal: https://school-support.mpac.ca/
-
- MPAC has a customer contact centre to assist with the online school support tool: https://www.mpac.ca/en/contact
-
- Download the fillable PDF application form below and follow the mailing instructions on the application.
Have you moved?
Even if you’ve supported Catholic schools in the past, your Catholic school supporter status does not automatically transfer when you move. To ensure continued support, we kindly ask that you re-declare yourself as a Catholic school supporter after each move.
