The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB) was pleased to welcome students, staff, representatives from Loyalist Township, Board Trustees, Father Charles, the architect and construction teams and family members to the official groundbreaking ceremony of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School in Amherstview.
In summer of 2024, the Ministry of Education approved the Board’s request to proceed with the construction of a replacement school for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School.
The replacement school will be constructed on the current grounds of the school, beside the existing school. This $28,279,689 construction project will include 518 pupil places, and three child care rooms for a total of 49 licensed spaces.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School will remain a kindergarten to Grade 8 school that is dual track, French Immersion and English learning.
“Our Board realized a need for the reconstruction of this school as Amherstview continues to grow,” said David DeSantis, Director of Education. “Our commitment to excellence in Catholic education continues for this expanding and vibrant community.”
Students who were present for the groundbreaking expressed excitement for a two-storey building, new spaces to learn and welcoming new friends to the school.
While construction is being completed, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School community will continue to be housed in the existing building.
This project is part of the province's capital investment program to support students with better learning spaces.
The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board serves approximately 12,000 students, employs over 1,400 full-time equivalent staff and covers a geographical area of more than 16,000 square kilometers.
