And they're off! ALCDSB Participates in annual Cardboard Boat Races

February 01, 2018

Cardboard and duct tape. And that's it. Two materials that elementary students use to create cardboard boats for this year's second annual Cardboard Boat Race, held at the Quinte Wellness Centre.

Fourteen teams from 7 ALCDSB schools - St. Joseph, Holy Rosary, St. Michael, Sacred Heart (Batawa), Georges Vanier, St. Gregory and Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Schools - had just two hours to build their boat. They were judged on theme and boat decorations and then hit the water. In the pool, they raced from one end to the other and then participated in a weight competition.

In order to participate all schools are affiliated with Skills Ontario and as a result are able to take advantage of some great in-class skills presentations. These presentations are focused on informing young students of the great opportunities available in skill trades.

Skills Ontario has run this event across Ontario for over 20 years. This is the second year that this event was held in Belleville.

Congratulations St. Michael Catholic School! A speedy boat and 480 lbs in the weight competition landed them a silver medal!
